The diameter of the gourds is commonly listed as the size of the asalato.

A comfortable diameter for an individual gourd for any given player varies due to the size of a player's hand.

As players progress and become more proficient, they can switch to larger sizes, which makes clicks more powerful.

Most players start out with smaller sizes, such as around 4.5 mm. Sizes at 5.0 mm and above are often marketed as for "advanced" players for this reason.

A player should be able to fit two or three fingers in between the rope and their fingers when holding a pair of asalato in flip position.
